SCHEDULE
Wednesday 13th November – 1pm to 2:15pm
An Introduction to the World of Net Zero
If you’ve heard of the term Net Zero and have ever considered learning more about it, then this taster lecture is for you. You’ll be introduced to the concept of Net Zero, and why it’s of interest – particularly from the perspective of the UK. We’ll then delve into the greenhouse effect to outline what’s happening on our planet, going into a specific greenhouse gas that’s leading the charge in climate change. We’ll move onto some of the options that we can implement – the supporting tools at our disposal – and finish up with some discussion into the world of carbon capture, and notably what that means to the UK.
Wednesday 20th November – 1pm to 2:15pm
Introduction to Circular Economy
This webinar on the circular economy is designed for professionals, business owners, students, and anyone with an interest in sustainability. It provides an introduction to circular economy principles, focusing on strategies to reduce waste, create sustainable business models, and improve resource efficiency. Participants will explore real-world examples and case studies, including the role of critical raw materials, recycling technology, and the industrial revolution in Wales. With a blend of theory and practical insights, this seminar equips attendees with foundational knowledge to apply circular strategies effectively, guided by expert instructors.
Wednesday 27th November – 1pm to 2:15pm
Introduction to Renewable Energy Technologies & Project Finance for Renewable Energy Projects
Renewable energy is on the up. In the second quarter of 2024 in the UK, renewable energy accounted for a record high of 51.6% of electricity generation. With the UK government aiming to decarbonise its energy system by 2035 and reach net zero by 2050, this figure is only set to increase over the next two decades.
This webinar covers two topics related to renewable energy technologies and infrastructure. It will cover renewable energy sources and technologies crucial for achieving net zero emissions. It will look at areas such as solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal and bioenergy, as well as the latest trends and emerging technologies being explored in this sector.
It will also provide an introduction to project finance, specifically tailored for professionals and enthusiasts in the renewable energy sector. Designed for individuals interested in developing small-scale renewable energy projects, such as wind turbines or solar farms, the seminar provides an overview of key financial concepts. Participants will gain insights into the principles of project finance, stakeholder roles, and energy yield calculations, with a focus on practical application. Ideal for those with a basic understanding of spreadsheets, this seminar delivers valuable knowledge in a focused format, supported by expert instructors.
Wednesday 4th December – 1pm to 2:15pm
Introduction to Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Technology
This seminar explores the increasing shift towards electric arc furnace (EAF) technologies in steelmaking, which can produce up to 85% less carbon dioxide than the traditional blast furnace route. This reduction is critical for achieving net zero carbon emissions in steel production by 2050. The seminar provides an overview of the furnace structure and equipment, the energy inputs used to melt and refine steel scrap and direct reduced iron, and the production of various steel products, including specialised alloys and stainless steels. It also highlights key developments in the EAF process aimed at reducing costs, improving productivity, enhancing product quality, and minimising environmental impact.
Wednesday 11th December – 1pm to 2:15pm
Low Carbon Active Buildings
Join us for an insightful webinar in the SWITCH-On Skills series, where we’ll explore the transformative potential of low carbon active buildings. Presented by Dr Nathan Cooze, this session delves into how buildings can function as power stations, advancing us towards a greener and more energy-efficient future. You’ll gain an understanding of the principles and technologies driving building-integrated renewable energy, along with insights into the economic, policy, and societal impacts shaping this innovative approach to sustainable construction.
Monday 16th December – 1pm to 2:15pm
The Hydrogen Economy
This seminar focuses on the role of hydrogen in the global transition to net zero carbon emissions, highlighting its potential as a complement to electrification. Hydrogen offers solutions for heavy industries like steelmaking, long-haul transport including aviation and shipping, and seasonal energy storage for power systems relying on variable resources such as wind and solar. The seminar addresses the challenges of producing hydrogen cost-effectively and without environmental harm, with a focus on electrolyser technology as a leading option. It also outlines the significant engineering challenges of scaling up production to meet the demands of achieving net zero carbon by 2050.
